Emergin, a Philips Healthcare company, announced today the availability of an interface between the Emergin alert management platform and the Voalté communication server to deliver alert message notifications from Emergin to the Apple iPhone and iPod Touch devices. This integration facilitates the orchestration of voice, alert, and text communications by leveraging the flexibility of the Apple platform.

After an onsite workflow analysis, Voalté worked with Huntington Hospital and Emergin to design an implementation plan to facilitate more effective communication among nurses and other caregivers. The initial implementation phase focused on replacing the pager with the iPod Touch which was then integrated to Philips monitoring through an Emergin Patient Monitoring Gateway.

The Emergin/Voalté solution then enabled “quick messaging” on the iPod Touch to facilitate real-time communication between caregivers. “The text messaging feature enables me to better prioritize my tasks and communicate more efficiently with my coworkers,” added Lee.

The results from implementation of the Emergin/Voalté solution at Huntington Hospital show a dramatic reduction in the number of phone calls made per shift and improved Press Ganey scores for the unit in the two categories, “noise in and around the room” and “response time to call bell.”

Nurses and other point of care workers are now able to receive all of their voice, alarm, and text messages on their iPhones, thanks to Voalté’s first-of-its-kind healthcare application.

Voalté (nomenclature derived from Voice, Alarm, Text) consolidates all three functions on the versatile iPhone platform. The application enables users to send and receive text messages, make voice calls, and receive critical care alarms on the iPhone, providing faster response to patient needs.

“Our nurses were carrying hospital provided pagers, wireless phones, separate pagers designed to alert them of critical patient alarms….there were too many bells and beeps requiring attention, not to mention their pockets were literally overflowing with electronic devices,” said Ron Rutherford RN, Huntington’s director of informatics.

GoodGuide(iPhone Medical App) today announced the first iPhone application that scans barcodes to provide impartial health, environment and social responsibility ratings of products and companies. The newest version of GoodGuide’s iPhone application, now available for free from Apple’s iTunes App Store, will make it easier and faster for consumers to find healthy and environmentally friendly products from socially responsible companies while standing in the aisle of a store. GoodGuide licensed Occipital’s state-of-the-art RedLaser barcode scanning technology for its new application.

GoodGuide’s new iPhone application can help consumers in the store with many common purchase decisions. For example, the application enables consumers to choose the healthier of two moisturizers, determine what’s in various all-purpose cleaners and learn whether organic product manufacturers have good social practices to go along with their healthy manufacturing processes. Consumers can scan a barcode in the supermarket aisle and immediately see detailed and independently researched ratings for health, environment and social responsibility for over 50,000 products and companies right on the phone.

In addition, by using the new version of GoodGuide’s iPhone application, consumers will be able to participate in picking the products to be rated next. GoodGuide will aggregate information about which products are scanned most frequently and use that information to prioritize the products that are rated by GoodGuide. This will ensure that the thousands of products rated every month are those that the GoodGuide community cares about the most.

Dara O’Rourke, founder and CEO of GoodGuide, emphasized that the new iPhone application is another step in the initial stages of the company’s vision to make information about consumer products more transparent. “The iPhone application illustrates how we can provide consumers with critical product information when they need it the most – in the store,” he said. “The service will only get stronger over time as we add more and more product information based on our community’s input.”

The launch of GoodGuide’s new iPhone application follows GoodGuide’s closing in June of this year of $5.5 million in Series B financing. GoodGuide’s Series B financing was led by new investor Physic Ventures with the additional participation of New Island Capital and existing investors New Enterprise Associates and Draper Fisher Jurvetson. In connection with GoodGuide’s Series B Financing, William Rosenzweig, Managing Director of Physic Ventures, has joined GoodGuide’s Board of Directors.

“This new round of financing will allow GoodGuide to further our mission of providing more transparency in the marketplace, helping us expand into new product categories and to rate tens of thousands of additional products, all with the goal of empowering consumers with the impartial information they need on the products they care most about. ” said O’Rourke.

In the last year, GoodGuide has won numerous awards including being named the “Startup Most Likely to Make The World a Better Place” at the 2008 Crunchies, Top 100 Web Sites of 2009 by PC Magazine, and CNET’s Editor’s Choice for “Best Newcomer” in CNET 2009 Webware 100.

Dan Diamond has been a family doctor for more than 20 years. But in a field as vast as medicine, and with so many constant advances in medical knowledge, he can’t possibly know everything. That’s where iPhone comes in.

With an application called Epocrates, Diamond can reference volumes of in-depth medical information right at the exam table. He can look up diseases and medications, drug interactions and side effects, drug prices, and even whether a particular medication is covered by the patient’s insurance.

“If somebody comes in and says they’re having problems with nausea, and I want to know whether that’s a side effect for any of the medications they’re on, it’s easy for me to look up the medications right there,” Diamond says. “And being able to do that in the exam room is a very good thing. It improves patient care.”

Epocrates also gives Diamond access to information about lab tests. “Last week a patient had a lab result that was abnormally high,” he says. “So I got out my iPhone and looked up alkaline phosphatase. It gave me a list of all of the likely issues that might be associated with a high result.” Another patient had a question about whether her husband’s life-threatening condition was genetic (and therefore might be inherited by her son), and Diamond was able to look that up, too.

Sometimes, after Dr. Diamond reviews a patient’s chart, he’ll do a quick check on Epocrates before entering the exam room. “Maybe they have hereditary spherocytosis (a blood disorder), a disease I haven’t seen for a while. And I need a little refresher: What’s the background? What labs should I be following for this patient? It takes about 30 seconds to look it up on my iPhone. And when I enter the room, I can bring it up.”

Anatomy lessons
In the exam room, Dr. Diamond also consults an application called Anatomy, which gives him access to hundreds of anatomical images drawn by Frank Netter, a famous medical illustrator. “That’s helpful if I have a patient with an injured knee, and I’m trying to explain what the meniscus is,” he explains. “I can really quickly bring up the pictures and say, ‘Here’s what the meniscus is. Here’s where your problem is. And here’s our game plan.’” Speed and ease of access are particularly important to Diamond, who sees 25-30 patients a day.

iPhone has helped Dr. Diamond communicate with some of his younger patients, too. “Kids want to know how stuff works, so showing anatomy pictures is helpful,” he says.

With teens, he uses YouTube to illustrate a very important message: seat belt safety. “For adolescents who don’t want to wear seat belts, I have a YouTube video bookmarked on my iPhone. It shows a guy who wasn’t wearing a seat belt falling asleep at the wheel, crashing, and being thrown through the back window of the car. It takes me 30 seconds to show the video, and it changes the teen’s behavior for the rest of his life.”

Diamond also uses iPhone to educate himself. With an app called Instapaper, which saves websites and articles for later reading, he catches up on medical journals and other interesting content. “That’s really cool, because I might see something and find it interesting, but I won’t have time right then. With Instapaper, I can just read it later, on my iPhone.”

iPhone at home
Dr. Diamond uses iPhone throughout the day, from the moment he wakes up until well past the time he finishes with patients. And he takes it with him on weekends, too. “I wake up to the alarm going off, and then I check the weather for the day,” he says. “At breakfast, I read AP Mobile News, and I look at the tide tables to see if it’ll be a decent day to go out and row.” On the water, iPhone helps Diamond track his workouts. “I even have an app called SpeedCoach, that allows me to get in my rowing shell and tracks my speed and my stroke count—without any external equipment, just using the technology that’s built into the iPhone.”

Do you think the iPhone got people thinking about the possibility of having a smart phone deliver a fairly rich application?

I think iPhones have done an amazing job of opening people’s eyes up to the possibility. People ask me a lot why the U.S. is thought of as so far behind the rest of the world in terms of mobile health. There are a couple reasons.
